For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest
two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.
It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
- Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)
“The Bible has authority. God Himself, in the flesh, declared the scriptures cannot be broken...This should be the greatest source of joy imaginable...We are standing on the same foundation, the same truth, the same source, and the same authority that Jesus Himself stood on.” - Toby Logsdon
Imagine being lost in the forest. At first, it’s all about finding your way home. You search high and low for any sign of civilization. Soon, hunger, thirst and cold replace fear and you stop worrying as much about finding an escape and focus on survival. Your days are now spent looking for shelter, food and water. You’re scratched and banged up and your clothes are torn, exposing you more and more to the elements. In Matthew 4, Jesus has been wandering in the wilderness for forty days. Over that time He experienced all of those same longings and desires. When tempted to satisfy His physical pangs, He says in Matthew 4:4, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ (NIV)” Against all earthly instincts, He lets the word of God take care Him. What is written trumps everything.
Proverbs 4:20-22 says, “My son attend to my words…for they are life to those who find them…” “Attend” means to pay attention to, give some time to something. It is in that time that we are fed, that we are filling ourselves with life and purpose.
The Bible is no ordinary book. It has the power to change lives because there is life in the Word! And when the power and truth of God’s Word is discovered, lives are changed, souls are saved, and hope manifests in our lives. We have the incredible privilege to know God personally through His Word, to let Him be our way, truth and life (John 14:6). When we base our lives on the Word of God, then Christ can create His work in us by the power of the Spirit!
